Alright so I am on a water shut-off kick lately. Today I am going to talk about the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System. We can talk about what I liked and what I did not like about this system as well as where I hope this system will go in the future. The Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System is made by the same company that is behind the Dome products and this made me skeptical because I was not a fan of the Dome Water Valve Shut-Off, that skepticism ended as soon as I saw included Valve Controller which just looks impressive. The Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System includes more than just the Valve Controller, it also includes three Leak Detectors and two Remote Leak Probes. I am very happy to see an all in one solution to leak detection and water control.
As mentioned the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System has an impressive Valve Controller. The size and build quality on it is what first struck me. The Valve Controller not only (as the name implies) controls the water valve but also acts as the hub that the leak sensors connect to and connects to the cloud via your Wi-Fi. This makes the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System a complete package but also makes it its own ecosystem and that I feel is a huge downside because third-party integration is non-existent. I would love for this system to integrate with Wink or SmartThings and not have to use a separate app for it but because of the quality of the components that are included I can deal with that, perhaps in the future we will see an API. Like the Dome Water Valve Shut-Off the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System uses an existing ¼ turn water valve, making it easily user installed without the need to do any plumbing. The Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System also utilizes two mounting points to your existing pipe (one on each side of the valve) by using integrated adjustable clamps. These clamps make for a much stronger connection that the pipe clamps included with the Dome Water Valve Shut-Off. My other complaint about the Dome Water Valve Shut-Off was with the motor, it was loud and seemed undersized, well the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System does not suffer from this same thing. The motor when operating is next to silent and turn the valve easily.
My favorite part of the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System is the leak
sensors. I first saw these sensors at CES last year and was very excited about them mostly because they were being shown in the Z-Wave Alliance booth and I was hoping to use them in-place of my existing LeakSmart Sensors. I was very disappointed when I received my Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System and found that it did not have Z-Wave. These sensors are very nicely designed and can sense water from all over itself. Let’s start at the bottom, there are three sets of contacts on the bottom and any one of them can detect a leak. You can also plug in a remote probe that have two sets of contacts that go all the way through the probe body allowing for double-sided sensing. But what I was most excited about is the top of this sensor. There are a set of contacts on it and the body slopes down pooling the water on top of this sensor allowing for the sensor to detect a drip from above. I love these sensors and really wish I could integrate them with my SmartThings.
Because I can not integrate the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System with SmartThings, I do have to have the Guardian App installed. Now I hate having multiple apps for home automation but at least the Guardian App is very well designed and presents itself nicely and is easy to use. I think of the Nest App when I look at the Guardian App and I attribute that to the welcome screen that gives you a quick look at the status of your home.
In the end I really like the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System and because it is a complete system I like the price which at first seems high but really is not when you think about what you are getting and compare that to other systems.
Is anyone out there using the Guardian by Elexa Leak and Flood Prevention System? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
