A lot of us use GitHub for a lot of codding projects, from Raspberry Pi to SmartThings to Android and Linux, GitHub is the default hosing site for most code projects. Well I have a feeling this is all going to change quickly as Microsoft is set to acquire GitHub. While I do not think Microsoft will do anything to mess up GitHub I do think that a lot of us everyday users of GitHub have a fear of Microsoft because let’s be honest to most developers Microsoft is kind of a joke.
Like with any acquisition I think over the coming days and weeks we will see a lot of developers jump ship because change must mean the end is coming but ultimately, I don’t think even Microsoft can screw up GitHub. If they do however we do have some alternatives like GitLab and BitBucket. Only time will tell how this will work out, but I fear that the knee-jerk reaction of some developers will hurt the IoT and automation in the short term. Separation of projects onto other sites will make it harder for the end users who might not be as technically savvy to find the code they need. SmartThings which is heavily community developed relies heavily on GitHub.
Do you use GitHub to host any of your code? What are your thoughts on the acquisition? Let me know in the comments below.
